MS-SRIP - Microwave System for Secret Remote Inspection of People (R&D in progress)

Operation of the Microwave System for Secret Remote Inspection of Person is based on active probing by coherent ultra-high frequency (microwave) radiation with stepped frequency change.

The system, which can be secretly installed anywhere in subways, corridors, lounges etc., constantly performs computer aided inspection of all people passing or standing in the system’s sensitivity zone, and determines the presence of suspicious subjects on their bodies under clothes. In case of detection of a suspicious object the system automatically associates the suspect person with the video image, and signals about the danger to the security personnel, who then take the decision about further actions. Manual control of system for selective examination of suspicious persons is also possible.

    The system allows one to:
  1. detect and to localize objects hidden under clothes
  2. categorize the detected object as metal or as a dielectric
  3. determine the size and the shape of the detected object
  4. determine the dielectric properties of nonmetallic objects in order to facilitate recognition of explosives.

Detection limit.

For 1m2 antenna array at distance 2-4 meters from the inspected person the system will detect and recognize a hidden pistol or plastic explosives weighting over hundred grams.

Secret inspection.

The system will look like a panel, which can be installed on any wall, under floor, on the ceiling, and disguised as an information or advertising board or a decorative panel. Overall dimensions of the antenna array will not exceed 0.1m x 1m2. Antenna array can be covered from the front side by any dielectric material (plastics, cardboard, marble, granite, etc.)

Safety of inspection.

The very low power of emitted electromagnetic radiation ensures total safety for human health. A discrete set of narrow emitted lines would not interfere with operation of other radio-electronic systems.

Current status of the system.

The principles behind the proposed system have been implemented in a laboratory prototype, which was used to carry out first measurements with object on human body. These measurements have confirmed the feasibility of the chosen method for examination of human body, and have allowed us to make tentative estimations of characteristics of the full-scale system.

Patents.

The technology is protected by the patent of Russian Federation # 2294549 of 09.08.2005.
